Baker Hughes: US rig count up 13 units to 430

The US drilling rig count increased 13 units to reach 430 rigs working for the week ended Apr. 1, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is down 234 units from the 664 rigs working this time a year ago.

Baker Hughes released its rig count data a day early because of the Good Friday holiday Apr. 2.

The number of rigs drilling on land was up 11 units week-over-week with a total of 416. The number of rigs drilling offshore increased by 2 units to reach 14.

US oil-directed rigs increased by 13 from last week to reach 337 units. This time a year ago, 562 units were drilling for oil. Rigs targeting gas decreased by 1 to reach 91, 9 fewer than were drilling for gas at this time a year ago.

Of the major oil and gas-producing states, Texas saw the largest increase. A 4-rig increase brought the rig count to 209 for the week. New Mexico’s rig count increased by 3 to reach 70 rigs running.

Oklahoma and Utah each gained 2 rigs to end the week with 19 and 6 rigs running, respectively.

With an additional rig each, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, and Colorado hit 47, 19, and 10 rigs, respectively.

West Virginia’s rig count decreased by 1 to reach 11 rigs working for the week.

Five states remained unchanged this week, namely North Dakota, 14; California, 7; Ohio, 9; Wyoming, 5; and Alaska, 3.

Canada’s rig count decreased 12 units to 69 rigs drilling for the week. The count is 28 more than the 41 units drilling this week a year ago. At 24 units, Canada’s oil-directed rig count is down 7 units for the week. The gas-directed rig count in Canada was down 5 units to 45.
